Martpourg

Martpourg, a sixteenth century depiction of the city of Marburg, by Sebastian Münster, orients the viewer east of the city. The illustration received publication as part of the collaborative volume La Cosmographie Universelle de Tout le Monde. In the volume, Sebastian Münster extends information and images related to countries formally referred to as the Gaul, a region of Western Europe previously occupied by Celtic peoples. Münster acquired knowledge on the Gaul through reading the research conducted by François de Belleforest, a historic French author of the sixteenth century.[1]
